Pound Exercise ClassWhat is POUND?       It’s an upbeat routine using weighted drumsticks, called Ripstix, to perform a series of movements.  Participants can expect to work up a sweat while drumming to the beat of the music.      The Pound Workout routines works all major muscle groups, including the abs, arms, legs, and gluts. The constant drumming and movement increases your heart rate, burns calories, strengthens muscles, relieves stress and boosts your mood, which makes it a great option for those looking to lose weight or improve cardiovascular fitness.So come POUND it out with Park & Rec!

Strength & Conditioning for KidsOur Wednesday strength and conditioning class for kids ages 10-15 will focus on the foundations of exercise and muscle development while improving your child’s confidence. Whether you are looking to improve your speed and reaction time, make the high school team, build muscle, get in shape, learn new exercises, or make new friends, this is the class for you. Coach Pete is a CSCS certified trainer currently training kids at the gym at the Wonderland of Ice. Pete will show you exercises to make you faster and stronger.  Kids will use body weight to get stronger, while working on core exercises to stabilize the muscles needed for balance and to help you get stronger. Kids will play games to work on speed, agility and reaction time.**Classes will meet and workout outside (weather pending) our building at 190 Kelsey Ave (the Park rec building) and start in the lower lot. Spring Kids Cooking Returns...hosted by Mary's Culinary Classes! Mary has established herself in several of the shoreline towns Parks & Recreation departments over the past few years and has been interviewed by both Channel 8 and the Register. Mary brings her love and knowledge of cooking to the kids by teaching them to measure and mix while teaching the safeties of the kitchen. Kids will eat their meal in class and take home any leftovers they don’t eat.Mary began her journey by watching and helping her mother baking and cooking traditional Italian cuisine. Her repertoire has expanded beyond cooking Italian food as she has spent many years working in the restaurant business. Mary spent many years working with both children and adults alike and books private birthday parties as well. Some classes are co-taught by her husband, Gregg. Easter Egg ScramblePeter Cottontail is in town, Saturday, April 12th, to deliver his eggs to West Haven residents at the Parks & Recreation site. Hop on down to 190 Kelsey Avenue to the lower pavilion behind the playground to join the hunt. Pre-registration is encouraged but not required. We will have 4 age groups: 0-3, 4-5, 6-7 and 8-10. Please bring ID with proof of residency on that day. We will have a sack race, bunny ear ring toss, and Egg on a spoon walk. We will also have an egg decorating contest per age group for those that bring a decorated egg with you (real, not paper) and enter into your appropriate age category with one of our staff. There will also be a jelly bean counting contest that you can enter a guess to win a prize. PLUS, PICASSO PARTIES will be face painting!Note: Only ONE parent/guardian may assist the 0 - 3 year old age group. West Haven Parks and Recreation and Youth and Family Service are partnering with West Haven Police Department's School Resource Officer's of the Crime Prevention Unit, to present the latest installment of our Westie V.I.P program! This exciting 3-on-3 basketball (single elimination tournament) will take place over three days during April break and is FREE for  to students in grades 5-6 and 7-8. Each participant will receive a complementary t-shirt. Strength & Conditioning for KidsOur Wednesday strength and conditioning class for kids ages 10-15 will focus on the foundations of exercise and muscle development while improving your child’s confidence. Whether you are looking to improve your speed and reaction time, make the high school team, build muscle, get in shape, learn new exercises, or make new friends, this is the class for you. Coach Pete is a CSCS certified trainer currently training kids at the gym at the Wonderland of Ice. Pete will show you exercises to make you faster and stronger.  Kids will use body weight to get stronger, while working on core exercises to stabilize the muscles needed for balance and to help you get stronger. Kids will play games to work on speed, agility and reaction time.**Classes will meet and workout outside (weather pending) our building at 190 Kelsey Ave (the Park rec building) and start in the lower lot. Please bring water.*Registration opens March 17th.

Track & FieldOur track and field program is a 6 week introductory program for both boys and girls ages 7 through 13.  It will run alternating Saturday and Sundays at the high school track located on educational way. We will introduce all the aspects of track and field including running, jumping and throwing events(Shot Put, Discus, and Javelin). Our head coach is the girls high school track coach and the assistants are high school track athletes who extend that love of the sport to our youth.  *Note:  We also run an adaptive sports program and can accommodate children with special needs.

Strength & Conditioning for KidsOur Wednesday strength and conditioning class for kids ages 10-15 will focus on the foundations of exercise and muscle development while improving your child’s confidence. Whether you are looking to improve your speed and reaction time, make the high school team, build muscle, get in shape, learn new exercises, or make new friends, this is the class for you. Coach Pete is a CSCS certified trainer currently training kids at the gym at the Wonderland of Ice. Pete will show you exercises to make you faster and stronger.  Kids will use body weight to get stronger, while working on core exercises to stabilize the muscles needed for balance and to help you get stronger. Kids will play games to work on speed, agility and reaction time.**Classes will meet and workout outside (weather pending) our building at 190 Kelsey Ave (the Park rec building) and start in the lower lot. Please bring water.*Registration opens March 17th.
